In the fall of 2024, I took a short trip to the city of Guangzhou in China to attend one of the world's largest international trade events. What I stepped into was a massive, three-week-long spectacle held twice a year. The event in question was the 136th. Canton Fair.

Each trade fair week is dedicated to different target groups. This time, the main focus was on steel products. Along the way, I also took a closer look at chemicals and air-water heat pumps. In short, the offering truly covers everything from one extreme to the other.

The Canton Fair, China's largest and oldest trade fair, is astonishing in its scale and diversity. As soon as you enter the exhibition complex, it becomes clear why the event attracts over 200,000 visitors from around the world each year. Thousands of exhibitors showcase products ranging from furniture and electronics to clothing and heavy industrial equipment. The fair genuinely feels like a global marketplace under one roof.

The fair's atmosphere is unique – intense, energetic, and full of action. The aisles are bustling with people, and negotiations, deals, and lively discussions are happening everywhere in the halls. One of the most fascinating aspects of the Canton Fair is that many small and medium-sized manufacturers showcase their products directly to international buyers, often without intermediaries. This creates real opportunities to find the exact right product or even to negotiate direct partnerships on the spot.

I began my tour in Area B, Halls 9-13. Due to my background in reinforcing steel and steel in general, the steel industry sections naturally drew me in. I had also scheduled meetings and sample collections with several suppliers in this area. A love for steel, as one rebar professional once said. China's steel industry is immense, and many companies were showcasing their latest production technologies and innovations. While the quality levels and production capacities varied, what was most striking was the strong emphasis on energy efficiency and more sustainable manufacturing methods. China has long been a global powerhouse in steel production, and it was clear from the fair that the future will increasingly focus on environmentally responsible solutions.

The air-to-water heat pumps I managed to learn about were clearly aimed at the European market. The trend towards energy efficiency and sustainable energy solutions was also evident here. This type of technology is developing rapidly in China, and many manufacturers are actively seeking to bring their innovations to Western markets.

The expo wasn't just about products; it was also an excellent forum for networking. I had the opportunity to speak with numerous industry professionals and gain valuable insights into the future of China's industry and its role in the global market. It was also a great way to learn about different company cultures and meet people from all over the world.

The Canton Fair is a true experience that offers a comprehensive overview of the development of China's industry and the broader business environment. While the scale of the event may seem overwhelming at first, it also offers unparalleled opportunities to learn, explore, and build international connections. If you are involved in international business, this event is worth exploring.
